What to Do When You Feel Overwhelmed and Don’t Know Where to Start
Feeling overwhelmed can make even simple things feel heavy.
You may have too many thoughts, too many decisions, too many tasks, or too many emotions happening at once. When everything feels urgent, it becomes hard to know what actually needs your attention first.
This is where the Simply Next-Step Method can help.
It is a gentle, practical way to calm the noise and choose one clear next step.
The Simply Next-Step Method
1. Pause for two minutes
Before you try to fix everything, pause.
Take two minutes where you do not make a decision, open another tab, answer another message, or add another task.
Just stop for a moment.
Your mind often needs space before it can sort anything clearly.
2. Write everything down
Take a notebook, planner, or a blank page.
Write down everything that is taking up space in your head.
This can include:
tasks
worries
decisions
things you are avoiding
things you need to remember
feelings that feel heavy
Do not organize it yet.
Just get it out of your head and onto the page.
3. Circle only one thing
Now look at the list and ask:
What is the one thing that would make today feel slightly lighter?
Not the biggest thing.
Not the most perfect thing.
Not the thing you “should” do.
Just the one next step that would create a little more calm.
Circle that one thing.
4. Make the step smaller
If the step still feels too big, make it smaller.
Instead of “sort my whole week,” your next step might be:
open the planner
write down tomorrow’s appointments
answer one message
prepare one meal
clear one small surface
book one support call
Small steps count.
They are often how balance begins again.
When you need support
Sometimes overwhelm is not solved by another list.
Sometimes you need someone calm, practical, and supportive to help you sort through what matters first.
